Retina Surgery in Cancun
When is retinal surgery necessary?
Retinal surgery is recommended when there is damage to the back of the eye that cannot be treated with medication or laser therapy and that puts vision at risk.
Most common cases:
- Retinal detachment
- Vitreous hemorrhage (bleeding inside the eye)
- Epiretinal membrane (visual distortion)
- Macular hole (affects central vision)
- Advanced complications of Diabetic retinopathy
In many cases, a vitrectomy is performed to gain access to the retina and repair it.
The Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages the blood vessels in the retina.
It may not cause any symptoms at first, but in advanced stages it can cause:
- Bleeding inside the eye
- Abnormal blood vessel growth
- Retinal detachment
When is surgery necessary?
When there is:
- Hemorragia vítrea persistente
- Retinal detachment
- Scar tissue that affects vision
In these cases, surgery can stop the bleeding and stabilize the retina.
Seeing the world clearly is not just a privilege, it is a new way of living.
Retinal surgeries
Vitrectomy
Eye surgery in which the vitreous humor is removed to treat conditions such as retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, or epiretinal membranes.Panretinal photocoagulation
Laser treatment that destroys areas of the damaged retina to reduce abnormal blood vessel growth, commonly used in diabetic retinopathy.Application of Antiangiogenics (Bevacizumab, Ranibizumab, Aflibercept, Faricimab-svoa)
Intraocular injections that block abnormal blood vessel growth and reduce edema in diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.Gas and Silicone (Cost per cc if necessary)
Substances used in retinal surgeries, such as retinal detachment, to help keep the retina in position while it heals.Ultrasound Mode A and B
Imaging tests that allow the evaluation of the internal structure of the eye, especially when the fundus cannot be visualized due to opacities.Ultrabiomicroscopy
High-resolution ultrasound technique that allows for detailed evaluation of the anterior segment of the eye, useful for diagnosing pathologies of the iris, ciliary body, and anterior chamber.Retinopexy
Procedure to repair retinal detachment by applying intraocular gas or cryotherapy to seal retinal tears and reestablish retinal adhesion.
What is retinal surgery like?
Depending on the patient's case, one of these types of surgeries may be necessary: Pneumatic Retinopexy, Conventional Retinal Surgery, or Vitrectomy.
Risks of retinal surgery may include:
- Bleeding
- Detachment that is not completely fixed (may require additional surgeries)
- Increased eye pressure (elevated intraocular pressure)
- Infection
- You may not fully recover your vision.
General anesthesia may be required for retinal surgery. The risks of any anesthetic are:
- Reactions to medications
- Respiratory problems
